Safe Pet Program

Safe Pet Program ensures safety for "other special family members"

If a victim is hesitant of leaving an abusive environment because of their love for their pets, our Safe Pet program helps to alleviate this concern.

The Safe Pet Shelter Program is available for companion animals such as cats, dogs, hamsters, birds, guinea pigs, or other domestic pets. Exotic animals such as snakes, iguanas and lizards, etc. must arrive in a secure living environment, and remain therein. The Safe Pet facility can house up to two animals per owner. If the owner has more, the situation can be evaluated as to how many pets can be accepted into the program. The Safe Pet Facility provides food, water, exercise and tender loving care for the duration of the pet’s stay.

When entering the program, the owner must provide Opportunities with proof of pet ownership. While maintaining weekly contact with the Domestic Violence/Rape Crisis Program concerning the duration of the pets stay, pets can be admitted for up to two weeks. Extensions are evaluated on an individual basis.

The Safe Pet Shelter Program is another way the Domestic Violence/Rape Crisis Program is making our community a safe, healthy living environment for everyone.
